George was baptised in Marske Cleveland, Yorkshire on 25th December 1815.
He appears in the 1841 Census in Whitby, Yorkshire, aged 25 and an Agricultural Labourer. His wife, Jane, was 21 and their son, Thomas Ditchburn, 3 months old.
The 1851 Census has George and Jane living in 5 Sandgate, Scarborough. George, aged 36 was then a fisherman and born in Marske Cleveland. His wife, Jane, aged 30, was also born in Marske Cleveland. Their children at home were:
Thomas Ditchburn born in Whitby and aged 10
Robert Ditchburn born in Sherburn, Yorkshire and aged 8. He married Jane Elliott on 1st May 1868
George Ditchburn born in Scarborough and aged 6
Mary Ann Ditchburn born in Scarborough and aged 2
Joseph Ditchburn aged 7 months
