Cyndis List – the best search facility for family history sites

 

Commonwealth War Graves – Find any relative buried in a CWG cemetery

 

British Library – Find any book or pamphlet which may have been written by an ancestor or a reference work – saves time when you visit

 

Public Record Office – Find any document which is held at Kew or The Family History Centre in London

 

1901 Census – Search for details of your ancestors in the UK 1901 Census

 

Society of Genealogists – Find any document held by the Society. If you do not become a member, you pay by the hour for research at their building, located in London. Their web site has a few counties of the 1841 Census and this is growing; it does cost money to access the information

 

Rootsweb World Connect Project – useful search facility for individuals

 

GenForum – Forum for listing research interests and contacting others

 

National Register of Archives – type in any family name and see if there are any relevant documents or papers.

 

Free Births Marriages and Deaths - access to an index for the post 1837 Index Registers. Not complete but growing every month

 

Ancestry.com – you have to  pay for access to most information on this site but it is one of the most useful for finding American ancestors and some from the UK. The site also contains the 1861 to 1901 Census returns. The 1851 Census is gradually being entered..  Also available is the British Dictionary of National Biography with an Index
