George Ditchburn

Son of George Ditchburn and  Jane Clark,  father of George Ditchburn and husband of Isabella Bryden

George was baptised in Marske Cleveland, Yorkshire on 27th May 1787

He married Isabella Bryden in Marske Cleveland on 4th May 1810. They were both of the Parish of Marske. Isabella, baptised 8th February 1789, was the daughter of Thomas Bryden and Hannah Hanforth.

They had the following children baptised in Marske Cleveland

Thomas Ditchburn born on 12th May 1811 and baptised on 3rd June 1811. He married Eleanor Anderson c. 1830. They had the following children

Robert Ditchburn born c. July 1831 and died before 1833

Robert Ditchburn born 1833 and died in August 1887

Susanna Ditchburn born c.1835

Jane Hannah Ditchburn born c. July 1836 and died in March 1837

Ann Margaret Ditchburn born c. October 1839

Eleanor died in September 1843. Thomas then married Elizabeth Stonehouse on 15th December1844 and they had the following children:

Richard Ditchburn born c. 1847

Mary Ditchburn born c.1851

Thomas Ditchburn born c. 1854

George Ditchburn born c. 1858 and died on 15th October 1864

Elizabeth died in August 1883 and Thomas on 23rd November 1888

Robert Ditchburn  born on 9th July 1812 and baptised on 18th August 1812. He married Martha Cook in Skelton, North Yorkshire on 9th June 1834. They had the following Children:

Robert Ditchburn  born in Moorsholm in February 1840

Elizabeth Ditchburn born in Moorsholm c. 1842

Robinson Ditchburn born in Moorsholm c. 1844 and died in Skelton on 25th July 1861

Thomas Bryden Ditchburn born in Moorsholm in June 1846

Newark John Ditchburn born in Moorsholm c.1849

Michael Ditchburn born in Moorsholm in October 1850 and died in Skelton on 27th December 1857

Mary Jane Ditchburn born in Moorsholm in April 1853 and died on 9th July 1855

Mary Jane Hannah Ditchburn born in Moorsholm in April 1856

Robert John Ditchburn born in December 1864

Robert died in Moorsholm on 13th September 1884 and was buried in Moorsholm on 16th September 1884

George Ditchburn baptised on 25th December 1815

Hannah Ditchburn baptised on 8th October 1817. She married John Smith in Skelton on 10th August 1844. Hannah died in Esh, Durham in 1897

William Ditchburn  baptised on 17th November 1819. He married Eliza Gamesby. They had one daughter

Hannah Ditchburn baptised in Danby, North Yorkshire on 3rd February 1852

William died c.1902

John Ditchburn  baptised on 18th November 1821 and buried in Marske on 10th December 1891

Joseph Ditchburn baptised on 30th April 1823. He married  Mary Ann Yarker on 7th April 1851. They had the following children:

Henry Ditchburn born in Marske c. 1852

Esther Ditchburn born c. 1853 and died in February 1873

Mary died in August 1877 and Joseph was buried in Marske on 17th May 1893

According to the 1841 Census George and Isabella still lived in Marske Cleveland with the following children, all born in Marske, present:

Newark Ditchburn aged 18, baptised on 30th April 1823 and buried in Marske on 23rd April 1847

Andrew Ditchburn aged 15 and born c. 1826. He married Mary Smith in Upleatham, North Yorkshire on 10th January 1854. They had one son:

John George Ditchburn born c. 1856 an died in December 1856

Andrew was buried in Marske on 18th September 1866

Michael Ditchburn aged 11 and baptised on 18th May 1830. He died c. 1892 in Guisborough, North Yorkshire

According to the 1851 Census Isabella was a widow of a sailor aged 60. Also present in the house were the following children all born in Marske:

John Ditchburn aged 30 and an Agricultural Labourer. According to the 1871 Census was living in the High Street, Marske, aged 50 and an agricultural labourer. Next door was his brother Joseph

Joseph Ditchburn aged 27 and an Agricultural Labourer. According to the 1861 and 71 Census, Joseph, aged 37 and 46,  a carter in in 1861 and a coal loader in 1871, was living in the High Street, Marske, next door to his brother John. He was married to Mary, aged 43 and they had the following children present in both Census years – ages in 1871:

Henry Ditchburn aged 19, a Baker and Grocer

Esther Ditchburn aged 16

Isabella Ditchburn aged 14, a Pupil Teacher

According to the 1881 Census, Joseph was a widower, aged 57 and still a coal loader. 

Henry aged 29 and  a Post Office letter carrier

Isabella aged 24, Housekeeper

Andrew Ditchburn aged  25 and an Agricultural Labourer

Michael Ditchburn aged 19 and a Mason

Ann Ditchburn aged 11 a granddaughter and daughter of a Labourer

William Smith aged 5 a grandson and son of a Cartwright 

According to the 1861 Census Isabella was a widow of a sailor, aged 70. Also present in the house were the following children, all born in Marske except Mary:

John Ditchburn aged 40 and a Matiner

Michael Ditchburn aged 30 and a Mason

William Ditchburn aged 15 a grandson and a Scholar

Mary Dichburn aged 11 a granddaughter and born in Scarborough.  This is Mary Ann, the daughter of George and Jane

Isabella was buried on 7th June 1862 in Marske
