The Children of John Nalton & Jane Oxendale

John Nalton: c.1832                 

According to the 1841 Census, John was aged 9 and born in Norton, Yorkshire; John was then living in Wranghams Yard, Providence Place, Driffield,Yorkshire.  John appears in the 1871 Census, aged 38, a Sawyer, married to Eliza, aged 36 born in Driffield.  They lived in Washington Street, Driffield with the following children all born in Driffield:

John W Nalton aged 11 and born c.1860. He was a Scholar.

Mary Ann Nalton  aged 9 and born early 1862.  She was a Scholar

 

Edward Nalton aged 7 and born early 1864. He was a Scholar

 

Jane Nalton aged 2 and born c. 1869

 

Charles Nalton aged 4 months and born late 1870

Also present was John’s brother, George, aged 19, a Blacksmith

According to the 1891 Census, John, aged 31 and a Grocer’s Assistant, was living in Harpum, Driffield, with Mary E, Hackner, his wife aged 33.  They were living in the home of Mary’s parents, Edward Hackner, born in Harpum and Hannah born in Hunmanby,  both aged 63. Edward was a Farm Labourer and Hannah a Dressmaker. Also present, all born in Harpum, were the following additional children of Edward and Hannah:

Thomas Nalton: c.1834                 

According to the 1841 Census, Thomas was aged 7 and born in Norton, Yorkshire. Thomas was then living in Wranghams Yard, Providence Place, Driffield.

Mary Nalton: c.1838                     

According to the 1841 Census, Mary was Aged 3 and born in Norton, Yorkshire. Mary was then living in Wranghams Yard, Providence Place, Driffield. According to the 1851 Census, Mary was aged 13. Mary was then living in 77 Providence Place, Driffield. According to the 1861 Census, Mary was aged 23, a colourer of wood engravings, living at Wranghams Yard, Providence Place

Rebecca Nalton: c.1840                

According to the 1841 Census, Rebecca was aged 1 and born in Driffield. According to the 1851 Census, Rebecca was aged 12. Rebecca was then living in Wranghams Yard, Providence Place, Driffield. According to the 1861 Census, Rebecca was aged 21, a colourer of wood engravings. In early 1868, Rebecca married William Thomas Fewester Smith in Driffield (baptised in Driffield on 7th December 1838 - 14th March 1920 in Driffield). According to the 1871 Census, They did not then have any children, but were living in Church Street Driffield.  William was aged 33, a Tailor born in Skelton, Yorkshire, and Rebecca, aged 30.  Also present were a brother of William – John Atkinson? – a Coachsmith aged 20 and John Singleton, a boarder and joiner, aged 20.

Aaron Nalton: 1849                   

According to the 1851 Census, Aaron was aged 2 and born in Driffield. Aaron was then living in 77 Providence Place, Driffield. According to the 1861 Census, Aaron was aged 12

George Nalton: c.1851

According to the 1861 Census, George was aged 9 and born in Driffield.  According to the 1871 Census he was living with his brother, John, and his family – see above. In 1891 George, aged 39 and a Postman, is married to Anne Eliza Morris, aged 37, whom he married in early 1874 and was born in Driffield. They lived at 40 Washington Street, Driffield with the following children all born in Driffield:

Ernest Topham Nalton  was aged 13 and born c.1878.  He was then an Errand Boy.  He married Evelyn Florence Poole.  On the birth certificate of their daughter, Doris, in 1902, Ernest's job was that of a Stock Room Boots. At some point Ernest took employment with the L.M.S. Railway Company and the family moved to 48 Maxwell Road, Crewe; Ernest worked as Goods Checker ib the Goods Sheds.  Ernest died c.1938 and Florence in 1950 in Crewe. They had the following children, all probably born at138 Napier Street, Ecclesall, Bierlow

George Nalton

Samuel Henry Nalton born on 18th March 1907 and died in 1991

Clara Nalton was aged 8 and born c.1883.  She was a Scholar

Edwin Nalton was aged 6 and born mid 1886. He was a Scholar 

According to the 1901 Census, George, aged 49 and Annie, aged 51, were living at 4 Washington Street, Driffield.  George was a Rural Postman .  Children at home were:

Clara Nalton aged 18. She was a servant

Edwin Nalton aged 16. He was a Printer’s Apprentice

There was also a household servant resident
