John Ellis

 

Son of John Ellis and Susannah Quinby, father of Arthur George Ellis and husband of Alice Pauline Roughton

John was born in St John Street, St Mary’s Parish, Lichfield on 13th July 1879.  His father, John was then an Omnibus Driver

According to the 1901 Census has John living at 28 Wade Street, Lichfield, with his parents.  John was a Grocer’s Assistant

On 20th June 1905, John married Alice Pauline Roughton at the Parish Church, Kettering, Northamptonshire.  John was then a Grocer of Waltham Cross in Essex.  Witnesses at the wedding were:

George Kendall                        Alice’s sister’s husband

Harry Norton Kendall                Alice’s nephew

Their initial home in Waltham Cross was at 7 Chiltern Cottages, Swanfield Road

John and Alice had the following children:

John Roughton Ellis Known as Jack married Margaret Weatherby, and they had one son, Peter, who married a Christine Ellis and they had three children

Nicola Ellis

James Ellis

Jack died c.1980

Joseph Ellis married Hilda Clarke and they had 4 children

Jennifer Ellis married John Eadon and had two children, James Eadon and Max Eadon

Judith Ellis married Peter Hughes and had three children, Wendy Hughes, Clare Hughes and Helen Hughes

Martin Ellis

Vivienne Ellis married Peter Leloupe and had two sons

Joseph died c.!988

Edith Grace Ellis born c.1909 and died in 2000

Arthur George Ellis born on 9th July 1911

Howard Ellis   married Iris Price and they had two daughters:

Valerie Ellis born c.1943, married Clive Brazier and had two sons:

Janet Ellis born c.1950, married Robert Lewis and had two children

In the 1920’s John and Alice separated.  John lived with a Mrs Gill in London and they had several children.

John died in King George Hospital, Ilford, Essex on 28th January 1949 at the age of 69. His home was noted on the death certificate as 3 Wilton Road, Ilford, but is more likely to be Walton Road. The informant was W. Ross Lane, Chief Resident Officer at the King George Hospital – confirming that by 1949 the family and possibly Mrs Gill’s family were neither present nor involved.

However on 7th June 1949 Administration was granted to his wife, Alice of 33 Quinton Road, Birmingham 17, “the lawful widow and relict”, in the sum of £203.17.4
