John Burton Gill

Son of John Gill and Margaret Sawrey, father of John Gill and husband of Hannah Dale

John was baptised in Beverley, Yorkshire, on 1st April 1832 at the Church of St John & St Martin

He married Hannah Dale, the daughter of James Dale, on 22nd December 1851 at The Parish Church, Sinnington.  They were both living in Malton at the time of the marriage and both villages are west of Pickering.  John and Hannah were both servants and both fathers were alive and labourers.

According to the 1861 Census, John and Hannah were living in the Parish of St Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire.  John was a Tanner Labourer, aged 29 and Hannah aged 31, born in Hunmanby, Lincolnshire. The following children were at home:

Ann Dale Gill aged 11, a scholar and born in Hunmanby c.1850

Margaret H Gill aged 6, a scholar and born in Hunmanby c. 1855

Frances H Gill  aged 4 and born in Beverley, Yorkshire c. 1857

Mary Jane Gill  aged 11 months and born in Beverley early 1860

According to the 1871 Census, the family had moved to Holy Trinity Parish, Kingston upon Hull.  John was 39, a Tanner, and Hannah 41.  The following children were at home all born in Beverley:

Agnes Octavia Gill aged 8 and born on 2nd July 1862. She emigrated to Australia and married Charles Otto Falcon on 28th April 1884 on Thursday Island, Australia. Charles was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 29th August 1846. They had two sons and three daughters born in Australia

John Otto Falcon born on 12th February 1885 in Brisbane, Queensland

Octavia Falcon born on 1st April 1887 in Spring Hill, Brisbane, Queensland - She lived until the age of 94. She married George Amos Kilgour. They had a daughter Phyllis Hope Kilgour, who married George Albert Williams and had a son Paul Edward Williams

Olga Ingeborg Falcon born on 19th February 1889 in Spring Hill, Brisbane, Queensland.  She married Frederick Buller on 21st December 1910 and died on 9th December 1947

Charles Edwin Falcon born on 3rd November 1891 in Chippendale, New South Wales and died on 27th November 1892; his death registered in the District of Redfern

Agnes Falcon born on 3rd November 1893 Chippendale, New South Wales. She married Edmund Wightman Kerr on 26th July 1916 in Kaihu, New Zealand.  Agnes died on 16th August 1978 in Auckland

 In about 1896, the family moved to New Zealand and another daughter was born

Eva Falcon born in Auckland on 31st March 1900 and died on 28th July 1996

Charles died in Auckland on 25th June 1901 in Auckland Hospital. His death certificate states that he had been  in New Zealand for 4 years and was a labourer. Agnes on 14th July 1904

According to the 1881 Census, John was aged 49, a General Labourer, and living at 63 Middle Street North, Great Driffield with his wife Hannah who was born in Hunmanby, Yorkshire, aged 51, and they had following children:

Emma Gill was born in Beverley, Yorkshire late 1865 and was an Apprentice, aged 15

George William Gill was born in Hull Bridge, Yorkshire and was an Apprentice, aged 13.  According to the 1891 Census, George, aged 23 and his wife Maria, aged 27 and born in Driffield, were living at 6 Annies Terrace, Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire.  George was a Compositor. The following children were at home:

Harry Gill aged 3 and born in Driffield

 

William Gill born in Hull

 

Horace Gill born in Hull

Also in the house was George’s sister, Fanny E, aged 17, a Tailoress

John Gill was born in Hull on 6th April 1871 - see note

Fanny R Gill was born in Hull, Yorkshire c. 1874 and was a Scholar, aged 7. In 1891 she was living with her brother George and his family and was a tailoress

According to his son’s marriage certificate of 22nd April 1895, John was not listed as deceased and his job was that of a Tanner.  However, John had died in 1888.

Hannah died aged 56 on 14th September 1886 in George Street, Driffield.  Her husband John’ profession was noted as Tea Dealer and the informant was her son George William Gill.

John died aged 55 on 18th January 1888 in George Street, Driffield.  He was still a Tea Dealer and the informant was his daughter Emma Gill
