Sir Thomas Grey

 

Son of  Sir Thomas Grey and Margaret de Pressene, father of Sir John Grey and husband of Lady Joan de Mowbray

Thomas Grey was born c. 1359 of Heton, Durham and Berwyke, Northumberland

 

Thomas, like  his father, became a knight and in 1390 Constable of Norham Castle as his father and grandfather had been.

 

He married Lady Joan de Mowbray, daughter of John Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk.  They had five children

 

Sir John Grey born c. 1384

 

Sir Thomas Grey of Werke, born on 30th November 1384 at Castle Alnwick, Northumberland.

What part, if any, he played in the Percy revolt of 1405 is not clear. However, he became a ringleader of the Southampton Plot in 1415, which aimed to murder King Henry V in Southampton before he sailed to France, and replace him with Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March. However, Mortimer revealed the plot to the King, and the conspirators were promptly arrested and executed.

He married Alice Nevill, daughter of Ralph Nevill, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, c. 1401,by and they had eight children:

Elizabeth Grey born c. 1402 and died in 1454, married Sir Roger Widdrington

Sir Thomas Grey born c. 1405 and died in 1443, without issue

Sir Ralph Grey born in1406 and died in 1443, married Elizabeth Fitzhugh and left issue

Joan Grey born c.1408 and died in 148, married Sir John Salvine

a daughter born c. 1410, married an Arundell

Bishop William Grey. born c.1388. On 16th December1420 he was elected Dean of York and the position confirmed on 31st March 1421. On 4th April he was admitted.

 

On 28th December 1422 he was collated Prebendary of Botevant and on 30th December admitted by proxy being admitted in person on 6th May 1424.  in 1425 he was appointed Prebendary of Ulleskelf.   From 1426 to 1431 he was Bishop of London, then of Lincoln from 1431 to 1436

 

Sir Henry Grey of Ketteringham born about 1390. He married Emma Apleyard about 1415. He was buried in St Peter's, Kettering ham, Norfolk in 1470 "here lyeth Henry Grey, the Son of Syr Thomas Grey knyght of Heton and Ione his wife that was syster to the Duke of Norfolk, who dyed at Venys: and Emme the wife of thaforseyd Henry Grey, the dauughter of Willyam Apleyard of the Count of Nirfiolk Esquyer"

Matilda Grey born c.1399. She married Sir Robert Ogle

 

Thomas died on 26th November 1400. Joan died in 1410
