James Owen

Son of John Lines Owen and Ann Sheriff, father of Rex Lionel Bert Owen and husband of Ann Giles

James was born in Weston by Weedon, Northamptonshire on 7th June 1854.  He was baptised in the Parish Church on 23rd September 1855.

James married, after Banns,  Ann Giles on 7th June 1877 in the Parish Church of Lois Weedon (it is spelt Loys Weedon on the marriage certificate). His profession is recorded as a porter and the residence Lois Weedon. James’ father’s profession is recorded as a labourer - see Appendix O6.2 for a copy of the marriage certificate.  The marriage is also recorded in the Parish marriage register.

Witnesses at the wedding were an Edwin Humphrey and a Thomas Edwards

On the Wappenham, Northamptonshire, baptismal entry for his son, Wilfred, in 1879, his occupation is given as Railway Porter

The 1881 Census for Wappenham, records James and “Annie” living at The Green.  James was then 26 and his wife 25.  His employment was still that of a Railway Porter. His birth place and that of Annie is given as Weston Weedon and his children were noted as

Edith G Owen aged 6. The age of Edith does not seem accurate.

Wifred G Owen aged 1

Maud A S Owen aged 1 month.

In 1883 the baptismal entry of Ernest Owen, the second son of James and Ann, in Milton, indicates the move from Wappenham to Milton took place between 1881 and 1883. On moving to Gayton, where Sidney Owen, their third son, was borne in 1885, James’  occupation is noted on the baptismal entry as Station Manager, presumably Gayton Station.

The 1891 Census for Towcester records James then resident at 98 Albert Street, Towcester, Northamptonshire; he was 36 and Annie, 35.  His employment is noted as Railway Station Master. The children are again listed: Wilfred aged 11, born in Wappenham; Maud G? aged 10, also born in Wappenham; Ernest L aged 8, born in Milton; Sidney E aged 5, born in Gayton; Arthur aged 3, born in Towcester and Percy E Owen aged 1, also born in Towcester.  All the villages are in Northamptonshire.

Edith, was working in London as a servant in 1891

On the birth certificate of James’ son, Rex Lionel Bert Owen, in 1894, his address is given as Albert Terrace - not Street

The 1901 Census for Towcester records James of Albert Villas (presumably still 98 Albert Street/Terrace), aged 46 and Annie 45, with most of their children.  His job was then classified as Railway Station Master. James was clearly promoted from the post of Railway Porter to Station Master around 1884/85 at the age of about 30 - quite an accomplishment.

Kelly’s Directory of Northamptonshire for 1898 records James Owen as Station Master at Towcester.

James died at Northampton General Hospital and Administration records that his effects were valued at £210.8.10d

At Towcester cemetery, there is a gravestone inscribed:

"In loving memory of James the beloved husband of A Owen who died May 12 1904 aged 49 years "Peace perfect peace with loved ones far away. In Jesus keeping we are safe and they"
