John Gaskell

 

John Gaskell: 24 January 1795 - 23 July 1863

John was born in Wanstead, Essex and he married, by license from Canterbury, Mary Gillow of St Nicholas Parish, St Nicholas at Wade, Thanet on 11th August 1826. The marriage took place at St Nicholas Church. Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Gillow, baptised at St Nicholas’s Church on 27th July 1792. John was of St John’s Parish, Thanet, Kent at the time of his marriage. John appears as a witness at the wedding of Charles Thomas Gaskell and Charlotte Bruce in 1832

According to the 1841 Census for St Nicholas Parish, Thanet, John and Mary, both aged 45 (rounded down to the nearest 5 years) with Elizabeth Gillow, also aged 45, plus 4 servants

Mary died in 1851. At the time of the 1851 Census for St Nicholas at Wade, John, widower, was living with his late wife's sister, Elizabeth Gillow, baptised at St Nicholas on 15th August 1794, and staff.  John's occupation was noted as "Landed Property" and he was a Commissioner of Sewers.  Elizabeth was a Gentlewoman and soon afterwards John married Mary's sister, Elizabeth; she died in 1857.

In 1861, according to the Census, John, widow and landowner aged 66, was living  with his wife's niece, Elizabeth Gillow, aged 36,

When John died on 23rd July 1863 he was still of the Parish of St Nicholas at Wade, Isle of Thanet. His estate, according to his will of 20th December 1861, was valued at under £25,000 and was proved on the oath of John Gaskell, gentleman and nephew and John Carroway of Margate, upholsterer, niece’s husband.
